Professor Robert Oldham, ex Department of Zoology, University of Ibadan, has kindly identified this frog as a mottled burrowing frog (Hemiscus marmoratus). It lays its eggs in a terrestrial burrow near water. The female sits with the eggs until they hatch and then makes a tunnel in the soil down which the tadpoles travel to the water.
