After the speeches and the cutting of the tape by the Orangun of Ila to pronounce the reptile house officially open, we all headed to the refreshments table for a beer and a chat. The new reptile house proved very popular with the visiting public. By 1979 the Zoo was receiving nearly a quarter of a million paying visitors each year, more than any other public attraction of any kind in Nigeria.
